Grant Applications to Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation

 

Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation supports high-quality research in clinical medicine and related biomedical and/or health sciences. The Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation awards grants for these purposes. The awarded grants will be published on the Biomedicum Helsinki Day, 3 October 2012.

  • In this year (2012), the Foundation will allocate 150 000 € for grants to support young scientists. These grants are meant only for graduate students working towards their doctoral degree, and the same person can receive this grant maximally twice.
  • In addition, the Foundation will allocate 50 000 € to support post-doctoral training abroad of a clinical investigator or, alternatively, to support a research project of a clinical specialist with an M.D., Ph.D. degree who is at an early stage of his/her research career development.
  • A Tatu Miettinen memorial grant (25 000 €) will be awarded in 2012 to support research on sterols; this grant is open for all applicants.

Application dead-line

1 May - 15 June, 2012

Applications will be submitted only electronically for the first time this year. Access to the application form will be closed by the dead-line on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 16:00 hrs. No other calls for applications will take place in 2012.

The applications will be processed and evaluated during the summer and the Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation will make the decision on the awarded grants in September 2012. The final decision will be sent to the e-mail address provided in the application during September. 

The application and appendices

After submitting the electronic application form, the appendices should be added as one pdf-file (maximum size is 16 MB). Should the applicant submit two different grant applications, the appendices should be added to both applications.

1. Grants to young scientists

  • research plan (max 2 pages)
  • funding plan (the amount of the grant is either 5000 € or 3000 €)
  • permissions from an Ethical committee and/or Laboratory Animal Center (if applicable)
  • short curriculum vitae
  • list of publications

2. Grants to clinical investigators

  • research plan (max 5 pages)
  • funding plan (post-doctoral training abroad 50 000 €; other research support 25 000 €; see the application form)
  • description of the host group/laboratory for post-doctoral training
  • permissions from an Ethical committee and/or Laboratory Animal Center (if applicable)
  • short curriculum vitae
  • list of publications

3. Grant from the Tatu Miettinen Memorial Trust

  • research plan (max 5 pages)
  • funding plan (amount of the grant is 25 000 €)
  • permissions from an Ethical committee and/or Laboratory Animal Center (if applicable)
  • short curriculum vitae
  • list of publications

During the review process, the following matters will be considered, among others

  • significance of the proposal with regard to medical and health sciences
  • the relevance of the proposal to the key research fields and strengths of the University of Helsinki and the Joint Authority for the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (the applicant does not have to belong to these organizations)
  • research funding from other sources
  • previous research merits of the applicant

Use of grant, method of payment and reporting

  • Grants to young scientists are awarded as personal grants. This grant is given maximally twice to the same person.
  • Grants to clinical investigators are awarded as either personal grants (post-doctoral training abroad) or as research funds that will be administered according to the rules and regulations of applicant's organization.
  • Names of grantees will be published and grants will be paid in October on the Biomedicum Helsinki Day. All applicants will receive a decision e-mail from the Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation.
  • The grant is generally paid as a single payment. It must be drawn within one year from the day the funds were allocated.
  • The person receiving a grant must give a written report on the use of grant to the Board of Biomedicum Helsinki Foundation within one year. The person receiving funding must also provide Foundation with a copy of each publication that was supported by the grant.
  • The Foundation will inform The Finnish tax authorities of the grants and their recipient.
